Navigating the academic challenges in Persona 5 and Persona 5 Royal requires players to stay sharp during unexpected classroom pop quizzes and mid-semester exams. One of the most memorable early-game questions involves the famous satirical work by Ambrose Bierce, asking what chief factor or hinder factor drives human progress. Knowing how to answer this specific question correctly boosts your Knowledge stat, which is essential for unlocking key social links and advancing your phantom thief lifestyle.
The Devil's Dictionary Classroom Question and Answer
In the early months of the school year, your teacher poses a question referencing a famous literary work that cynically defines human behavior. When asked about what the book defines as the chief factor in human progress, the correct response to select is Villains. Choosing this option proves your understanding of satirical literature and earns you an immediate boost to your Knowledge social stat.
During exams, particularly the midterms in May, this subject appears again as part of a multi-part test. On May 13th, the exam asks players to name the specific book that defined a malefactor as the chief factor in human progress. The answer for that exam question is The Devil's Dictionary.
Understanding the Context Behind the Quiz Explanation
The question draws directly from Ambrose Bierce's real-world book published in the early twentieth century, which features satirical definitions of everyday words. In his cynical style, Bierce defines a "malefactor" or villain as an essential factor in human progress because opposition drives societal advancement and legal reform. Atlus incorporated this philosophical humor into the Shujin Academy curriculum to test players on classical satire and wordplay.
Understanding the reasoning behind these questions makes them easier to recall when review sessions and major exams pop up on your calendar. It highlights how Persona 5 blends real-world literature and philosophy into its daily school mechanics.
Why Answering School Questions Matters in Persona 5
Consistently picking the right answers in class is the most efficient way to raise your Knowledge stat without spending extra time studying at the diner or library. Higher Knowledge unlocks better performance on term exams, which rewards you with praise, charm bonuses, and unique items from Sojiro at Leblanc. Maintaining high grades also satisfies prerequisite requirements for hanging out with important Confidants like Makoto and Hifumi.
